Customized Equipment Coverage
What is customized equipment coverage?
Customized equipment coverage (sometimes known as “sound system coverage”) is an optional coverage available in many states. Sound system coverage will pay to replace the sound system you have installed in your car as well as other components like speakers and antenna that go with it and other customized additions.
What's covered by customized equipment coverage?
You should consider purchasing customized equipment or sound system coverage if your vehicle has permanently installed custom parts or equipment other than those installed by the original manufacturer. Examples of customized equipment include:
- Any dealer-installed equipment that is not offered by the original manufacturer
- Special equipment on vehicles, vans, and trucks, including: running boards, brush bars, roll bars, undercarriage lighting, fog lights, bed liners, camper shells, trailer hitches, etc.
- Customized wheels, spoilers, suspensions or performance-related equipment
- Stereo, sound recording, and television equipment
- Customized paint or decal
How much protection does customized equipment coverage provide?

Who needs customized equipment coverage?
Without this coverage, your policy covers only the original equipment included by the manufacturer. If your vehicle has additional equipment, accessories, enhancements, or changes that alter your vehicle's appearance or performance, it’s advisable that you buy additional coverage for these items.
If you have spent a good deal of money making
sure you have a top of the line sound system or customizing your car's appearance with a new paint job and spoiler, you need
customized equipment coverage. If you have the factory
minimum standard in your car, a simple tape or
CD player that would cost little to replace if
stolen or damaged, or if you don't really care
whether or not you have music, then you don't
really need sound system coverage.
If you have a sound system or any other customizations that fall somewhere
in between those two extremes, then it's up to
you. This is optional coverage, so it's not necessary.
But if you can't live without your music or the custom decals you had specially made, then consider
taking out customized equipment coverage. It usually only
adds a few dollars a month to your premium and
may very well be worth it to you.
How much customized equipment coverage do you need?
Again, it depends on the quality and extent of
your sound system. If your main concern is just
having some kind of aural entertainment, then
purchase the minimum offered amount. This will
make sure that you get a basic system into your
car right away should anything happen to yours.
If you will need to replace thousands of dollars
worth of equipment and specialized installation,
take out as much coverage as is necessary to replace
the entire system from to top to bottom.
