New Cars vs. Used Cars

A lot of times people don’t think about how their car insurance rates will be affected by the kind of car they buy. But choosing a racy sports car over an economical station-wagon will have a significant bearing on the amount you shell out for your car insurance. If saving money on your auto insurance is important to you, you’ll want to look at cars that are ‘insurance friendly’. What does that mean? Whether you are purchasing a new car or a used car, you want to stay away from vehicles with a lot of extra horsepower (such as muscle cars), luxury sports cars, large sports utility vehicles, or extremely small cars. A good rule of thumb is to avoid any car that looks like it would be a desirable target for thieves or any vehicle that could easily plow over one of its smaller counterparts. You want to choose a car that is not so big that even a little fender bender will cause large amounts of damage, but that is also big enough to protect the passengers inside.

Along with the make and model of your car, its age is going to effect your premium. In general, the newer your car is, the more it’s going cost you to insure because newer cars are more expensive to repair or replace if you are in an accident. Since older cars are not generally worth as much, the cost of repairing them is usually lower. However, remember that this only applies to comprehensive coverage. If you are only choosing liability coverage, your rate will remain the same whether you bought your car brand new yesterday or inherited it from your grandma, because the insurance company is not responsible for repairing your car if you only carry liability insurance. If you drive an older car, it may be worth it to save a little on your insurance coverage by only carrying liability, since your car might not be worth the cost of repairing it.
